He Who believes That Jesus is the Son of God Has Life

TOPIC: "He Who believes That Jesus is the Son of God Has Life" 1 John 5:6-12 John goes on to expose the truth about the work of the Lord Jesus Christ. Well, there were those who did not believe (the Gnostics) about the person and the complete work of the Lord Jesus Christ. According to them, the heavenly Christ came upon the Man Jesus after being baptized in the Jordan, and who then abandoned him before he suffered death on the Cross. John, as an eyewitness, exposes here the truth of the life and sacrifice of Jesus.

I. John says: "This is Jesus Christ, who came by water and blood..." (Vs. 6)

A. John insists here that the Lord is not only the Perfect Man, but also THE PERFECT GOD!

1. The same one who was baptized in the Jordan River is the one who gave His life as a sacrifice for sinners!

2. The men say to Christ, "Come down from the cross and we will believe in you." If they can only eliminate the cross from their thoughts they could feel happy. But John says: No! You cannot have the Lord Jesus Christ separate from His perfect redemptive work on the Calvary's cross.

3. (Vs. 6b) “And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. ”

4. This means that the Holy Spirit of God always testifies to the truth about the Lord Jesus.

5. John himself testifies that Christ came not with water only, but with "water" and with "blood", because this is the truth of God.

6. (Vs. 7) Having already stated in the previous verses about the Person and work of Christ, John now goes on to present to those who also bear witness to the trust of our belief in Him!

7. (Vs. 8) The apostle says that there are three who bear witness, THE SPIRIT, THE WATER and THE BLOOD, and all three agree. HOLY SPIRIT, BAPTISM AND DEATH!

8. The Spirit of God testifies to the truth that Jesus Christ is God and that He is the only Savior in the world. His testimony is found in the Word of God. (2 Timothy 3:16) "All Scripture is God- breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness..."

9. Then there is the testimony of the water. (Matthew 3:16, 17 "As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up...of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit... descending like a dove, and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven...This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” Thus, God the Father added His own testimony together with God the Spirit about the Person of Christ.

10. Finally, there is the testimony of blood. On the cross, the Lord Jesus testified about Himself that He was the Son of God (John 10:17, 18 "The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life--only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father."). No one took his life: He laid it on Himself. If he had been a man, he could not have done such a thing. The "blood" of the Lord Jesus Christ testifies that the issue of sin has been resolved once and for all and to God's satisfaction!

11. And these THREE WITNESSES "...convene." (they agree, coincide).” They are united in the same testimony regarding the perfection of the Person and work of Christ!

12. (Vs. 9) "We accept man's testimony, but God's testimony is greater..." How much more

should we trust the word of God, Who cannot fail or lie! It is most unreasonable (that lacks reason) not to believe God. HIS TESTIMONY IS FULLY BELIEVABLE!

13. (Vs. 10) When someone accepts the testimony (the affirmation of something, demonstrating the veracity) of God about His Son, God seals the truth by giving that person the testimony of the Spirit in himself.

14. On the other hand, if someone does not believe God, they make Him a liar, because they have not believed in the testimony that God Himself has given about His Son.

15. People believe that they can accept or reject God's testimony about Christ, but John wants them to know that to reject Him is TO ACCUSE GOD OF BEING A LIAR!

16. (Vs. 11) “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”

17. That God has given "eternal life" to men and that the "source" of this life is in his Son!

18. (Vs. 12) Taking it from here, the following conclusion is inevitable: He who has the Son has life! He who does not have the Son of God does not have life! Eternal life is not found in education, nor in philosophy, nor in science, nor in good deeds; it is not found in religion, nor in the church. To have "life" you have to have the Son of God! That is, true life, because "eternal life" is inseparable from Jesus Christ! Amen.
