"The Deepest Law of Life" Exodus 1:15-22 The highest authority, the king of Egypt, orders the simple midwives of the Hebrews instructions to kill the Hebrew children. Israel had filled them with fears because of their multiplication, wisdom, and strength.

I. Women of simplicity.

A. They feared God.

1. That fear led them not to do what the king ordered, for then it is obedience.

2. There was a line, they were midwives, they gave life they were not murderers.

3. They were not executioners (exercising the death penalty).

4. The pious (merciful, compassionate) disobedience of midwives to such an ungodly command.

5. They feared God, considered His law, feared His wrath more than Pharaoh's, and therefore preserved the lives of those who were born male.

6. The reward with which God rewarded them, "the attention" they had with His people: God did them good and especially made them houses, that is, He made them prosper in their families and blessed their children.

7. They disobey the king to obey the deepest law of life.

8. What we are to God: (Exodus 19:5) "Now, then, if you will heed my voice and keep my covenant, you will be 'my special treasure' over all peoples, for mine is the whole earth."

9. (Deuteronomy 5:29) Who could have such a heart, that they feared me and kept every day "all my commandments, so that it might go well with them and their children forever!"

10. (1 Kings 3:14) And if you walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as David your father walked, "I will lengthen your days."

11. (James 1:25) But the man who "looks attentively" at the perfect law, that of freedom and perseveres in it, "not being a forgetful hearer", but a doer of the work, he will be blessed in what he does.

a. In contrast, we have the man who looks closely at the word of God and who habitually puts it into practice.

b. His attentive contemplation and meditation have practical results in his life for obedient and faithful sanctification.

c. For him, the Bible is "the perfect Law of freedom without chains or sin."

d. The perfect law, its precepts (order, mandate) are not burdensome.

e. He is commanded to do precisely what "his new nature likes to do."

f. By obeying, he finds true freedom from human traditions and carnal reasoning.

g. The truth sets him free.

h. This is the man who "benefits from the Bible."

i. He does not forget what he has read.

j. Rather, try to live it in daily practice.

k. His "simple obedience" "childish" brings incalculable obedience to his soul.

l. He will be happy (fully satisfied to have it all) in what he does.

12. (Hebrews 10:24 and 26) But to sin voluntarily, deliberately after having received knowledge of the truth.

a. There is no more sacrifice for sins.

13. (Hebrews 10:29) Deliberate sin is a grave insult to the Son of God.

a. It is trampling on God the Father who "sanctified" him by "sprinkling with the blood of the covenant, the Holy Spirit to whose grace he resists.

b. Greater punishment because the privilege has been much greater.

c. He has trampled on the Son of God.

d. Deny all need for Christ after having been with Him.

e. He has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant in which he was sanctified.

f. It counts as useless and impure the blood of Christ with which it was ratified (approved) in the New Covenant.

g. He had been separated by this blood to a position of external privilege.

h. He had been sanctified through his association with the church: he prays, hears the word, sanctifies himself, but does not mean that you are saved.

i. He has outraged the Spirit of grace.

j. The spirit of God had enlightened him to the good news and had "convinced" him of sin and pointed to Christ as the only Refuge of the soul.

k. But he has outraged the Spirit of grace by belittling Him in an absolute way, Him, and the salvation He offered.

14. You know! The midwives did not know this law, they were only afraid of the God who had touched their hearts, so that they would not be able to touch the children.

15. They obeyed God directly.

16. (Revelation 22:14) Blessed are those who wash their clothes, to be entitled to the tree of life and to enter through the gates of the city.

a. Blessed are those who keep His commandments.

b. Those who hear the Word and obey it.

c. When you obey you are: Blessed are those who wash their clothes.

d. Your works are like the fruit and proof of salvation.

e. Only true believers have access to the tree of life and the eternal city.

f. May he regret that he could not come by having the Son of God and had as unclean the blood of the covenant in which he was sanctified, and affront to the Spirit of grace.

17. Two unaware women of such great law and grace could enjoy: He prospered their families; He did good to them.
