"Preserver of Men" Psalm 16:1-7 God is the protector, advocate, and caregiver. No one in life can take care of you more than God. You can't depend on anyone, only our God is our defender.

I. In whom do you rest in God or in man?

A. Like a corps of guards surrounding their monarch.

1. (Job 7:20) …What can I do to you, O Guardian of men?

2. This occupation of grace of the Father is exercised towards our Mediator and Representative.

3. (V. 3) O my soul, you said to Jehovah; You are my Lord.

4. In the depths of His heart, Lord Jesus Himself bowed down to render service to His heavenly Father and before the throne of Jehovah His soul offered allegiance to the Lord on our behalf. "Pass this cup from me, but Thy will be done."

5. You are my Lord, I will do what You say, for our lives.

6. I will be loyal to Your command.

7. There is no good outside of You, "all good will be of You."

8. From the death of the Son is reflected radiance upon each of God's attributes; yet the infinitely blessed God had no need for the obedience and death of His Son; it was for our sake that the work of redemption was undertaken and not for lack or necessity in the Almighty. How modestly He esteems His own goodness here!

9. It must be understood about what the Messiah did for men.

10. What can I give to You, my God, for all Your benefits to me? How will I pay you? I cannot do any good because my imperfect goodness cannot please you, for you are essentially perfect and good; the good I do cannot add to your good; my wickedness cannot harm you.

11. I receive all the good from You, but I cannot return any to You. You are far from needing me.

12. (V. 3) God’s children all partake of the nature of their heavenly Father.

13. For the saints who are on earth and for those of integrity, it is all my pleasure.

14. These sanctified, though still on earth, partake of the results of the mediating work and by His goodness are made what they are.

15. The peculiar people, zealous for good works and sanctified for sacred service, are clothed with the righteousness of the Savior and have been washed in His blood and therefore receive from the gift treasured in Him; these are the people who benefit from the work of the Man Jesus Christ.

16. (V. 4) The pains of those who diligently serve (much interest, efficiency, care, speed) to another god will multiply.

17. Believers of mere profession are often slow to serve the true Lord, but sinners diligently serve other gods.

18. They run like crazy, while we crawl like snails.

19. May their zeal be a reproach for our tardiness.

20. He who multiplies the gods, multiplies his own afflictions; for he who believes that one God is too little, will find that two are too much, and yet hundreds will not suffice.

21. (V.5) Jehovah is the portion of my inheritance, and it is mine the ability to achieve the effect that is expected or desired after the performance of an action.

22. With what confidence and joy, one turns to Jesus and Jehovah, to whom he possesses his soul and in whom he delights!

23. Content without measure with his portion in the Lord his God, "he has not the slightest desire to go in search of other gods."

24. (V. 6) The ropes fell on me in delightful places and the inheritance that has touched me is beautiful.

25. Jesus found "that the way of obedience leads to delightful places."

26. In spite of all the afflictions that mark His face He exclaims: Behold, I have come; "on the scroll of the book is written of me," and I delight in doing your will, my God; and your law is in my heart.

27. Though no other man ever experienced so much delight in service, for none has served so faithfully "with such results" in view of his reward.

28. (V.7) My conscience teaches me at night.

29. Great generals fight their battles in their minds long before the trumpet blows and so did our Lord to win our battle on His knees before winning it on the cross.

30. Night is the hour that sin chooses for its sins; and it is the quiet hour when believers hear the calm (quiet, peaceful) voices of heaven and heavenly life within themselves.

31. Jesus knew where to go in what obeyed the Father: prayer, it was only up to God; Jesus triumphed in His surrender. Who are you going to in your struggles? You will have victory if you go to prayer.
