The Transitory Character of Life Part III (Psalm 39:7-13) And now, Lord, what will I expect? My hope is in you. The Psalmist turns his eyes and heart to Heaven. When he understands that he cannot find his solid satisfaction in creatures, he is prepared to find it in communion with God; and to Him we should be led by the disillusioned (disappointed) who suffer in this world.

I. (Psalm 39:8) Deliver me from all my transgressions.

A. He asks to be delivered from his sins.

1. In your afflictions you recreate that life, or someone has made you suffer or labor.

2. The problem is: Deliver me from "all" my transgressions (breaking, law, precept, violating) (disobeying).

3. Perfect sign when the Psalmist no longer "insists" on "his afflictions," but asks to be "delivered from his sins."

4. What is sadness when we compare it to sin?

5. May the poison of sin be removed from the cup, and we need not fear its bitterness because bitterness heals.

6. No one can deliver a man from his transgression, more than the blessed One whom we call Jesus because He saves His people from their sins.

7. Do not put me for derision (cruel mockery, the purpose of which is to humiliate or despise) of the foolish (meaningless fool).

8. For the carnal pleasures of a few days some barter (exchange, permute) their eternal jewel!

9. For a few grains of earth you lose the "cobbled city of gold and pearl gates"!

10. Oh foolishness without measure!

11. Oh inconceivable madness! (Which cannot be conceived in the mind, understood.)

12. Truly, we are to pray in all sincerity, "Do not put me for the derision of the foolish."

13. (9) I was silent, I did not open my mouth, "for You did it."

14. God is teaching His children here.

15. This is the true character of His dealings with them.

16. The education of His saints is the object (goal) in sight.

17. It is a training for the kingdom; it is an education for eternity.

18. It is the discipline of love. Every step of it is kindness.

19. There is no anger or revenge in any part of the process.

20. School discipline can be severe and rigid, but family faith is love.

21. The holy elder was in prison "for the Word of God" and the testimony of Jesus Christ. His relentless persecutors (who cannot be appeased, calmed) carried on a tray the bleeding head of his martyred son, Richard Cameron and asked him with derision (mocking, ironic) if he knew him. "I know him, I know him," said the father and kissed the son's forehead..." it is that of my son, my own beloved son! It is the Lord! Good is the will of the Lord, who cannot harm me or mine, but has made goodness and mercy follow us every day of life.

22. If the King of Kings puts His hand on our shoulder, dear ones," let us "put ours on our mouths."

23. One day, a visitor was asking questions of deaf-mute children.

24. The visitor wrote: Why were you born deaf-mute? A look of anguish clouded the girl's face for a moment, but she quickly disappeared and taking the paper and pencil wrote: "Okay, Father, for this is how it pleased Your sight.

25. (Psalm 39:10) I am consumed under the hardness of your hand.

26. We can base our pleas on our weakness and affliction.

27. It is good to show our Father the bruise (injuries, marks) that result from His scourges, in case His paternal compassion lightens His hand and moves Him to comfort us in His chest.

28. It is not to consume us that He directs His discipline, but to consume (extinguish) our sins.

29. (Psalm 30:11) By punishing their sins, You correct man.

30. God does not judge with His rod; He uses it because of sin and with a view to beating us with it; hence He wants us to feel the blows and we can truly feel them. And undo like a moth all its beauty.

31. As the moth spoils the cloth, thereby its beauty, piercing it and rendering it useless, so God's punishments reveal in us our madness and weakness and make us feel like old, worn-out, and useless dresses.

32. Beauty must be very little when a moth can consume it and a rebuke spoils it. C.S.

33. Some butterflies only live about twenty-four hours.

34. What a tragedy for one born on a rainy day!

35. Undoubtedly, as a breath, every man is. What is greatness?

36. Think about it. What is the greatness that you have?

37. As the flower of the field today is and tomorrow nothing is. May my prayer (12) oh, Jehovah.

38. David's Prayer we find three things, which are three qualifications for acceptable prayers; first humility; the second is fervor and insistence; and the third is faith.

39. (Hebrews 11:6) He who goes to God must believe that He exists and that He is the rewarder (rewards) of those who seek Him diligently.

40. "Do not become deaf to my tears."

41. Tears speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues; they act as keys in the departments of tender hearts, and compassion denies them nothing if through them the weeping one looks at the drops of Jesus' blood.

42. For I am an outsider with You.

43. I share God's hospitality as a stranger hosted by a generous host.

44. All men are actually strangers and foreigners, but the Saints discern better and recognize it more frankly."

45. No one has permanent dwellings on earth.

46. (13) "Leave me and I will take strength"; before I depart and am no more.

47. Man in his corrupt work is like Nebuchadnezzar: he has a beast heart that only longs for the satisfaction of his carnal appetite; but when it is renewed by grace, then it regains understanding.

48. David, so far, has not yet recovered from that sin that put him on as low a level as we can perceive in verses 10 and 11.

49. And the good man cannot think of dying, accepting the fact "until his heart is in a holier condition; and for the peace of the gospel, serenity of conscience, and inner joy; every lack of holiness is like "poison" to the spirits that drink it. William Gurnall.
