Ignorance is dangerous

"Ignorance is dangerous" – Matthew 22:29 In John 20:9, until now, the disciples had not truly understood the Old Testament Scripture that said that the Messiah must rise from the dead. (Psalm 22:16-22; Isaiah 53:9-12) The Lord Himself had told them repeatedly, "but they had not assimilated it." John was the first to understand.

I. Let us be careful how ignorant we are because of the great dangers of ignorance (ignorance is the lack of knowledge = set of information stored through experience).

A. It is the person who ignores something, does not know it or does not understand it.

1. (Matthew 22:29, 39) You err, ignoring the Scriptures and the power of God.

2. We cannot be ignorant of what Holy Scripture says that it was given to us, by grace.

3. Basically, they would argue (arguments, set of ideas or reasoning expressed to demonstrate the truth or falsity of) that the idea of the resurrection presented insurmountable difficulties and that it was therefore unreasonable and therefore not true.

4. Jesus replied that the difficulty lay not in doctrine, but in their minds: they were ignorant of "the Scriptures and of the power of God."

5. First, they were "ignorant of the Scriptures."

6. The Bible never says that the marriage relationship will continue in heaven.

7. Although men are recognizable as men, and women as women, they will all be like angels in the sense that they never marry or are given in marriage.

8. Second, they were ignorant of "the power of God."

9. If He could create men from the dust, could He not just as easily lift from the dust the bodies of those who had died and transform them into bodies of glory?

10. (Acts 13:27, 28) Jerusalem and its rulers. (27-28).

11. But the inhabitants of Jerusalem and their rulers had not "recognized Jesus as the 'longawaited' Messiah.

12. Let us be careful that we do not recognize the one we say we know.

13. They did not realize that He was the One of whom the Prophets had written.

14. Brother, of not recognizing the One who gave His life for you, by making us ignorant (ignorance due to lack of knowledge = set of information that we should already have) (by the faith acquired, the scriptures).

15. When "every Sabbath" they heard predictions (claims that certain particular events will or will not occur) concerning the Messiah, they did not connect them with Jesus of Nazareth.

16. Hence, they themselves were the instrument of compliance with those same deeds, by condemning Him.

17. "And finding in Him no worthy cause of death, they handed Him over to Pilate to be killed.

18. (2 Corinthians 3:13) And not like Moses who put a veil over his own face, so that the children of Israel would not fix their eyes on the end of that which was passing by.

19. The background to verse 13 is found in Exodus 34:29-35.

20. There we learn that when Moses came down from Mount Sinai, after having been in the presence of the Lord, he did not know that his face was shining.

21. The children of Israel were afraid to approach him because of the glory of his face.

22. But he invited them to come and so they did.

23. Then he gave them as commandments all that the Lord had commanded him.

24. In Exodus 34:33 we read, "When Moses had finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face."

25. In 2 Corinthians 3:13, the apostle explains why Moses did this: "that the children of Israel might not fix their eyes on the end of that which was fading away."

26. It was already fading away and Moses did not want them to “see" the end of it.

27. It is not that Moses wanted to veil the glory itself, but the fading (loss) of glory.

28. Someone said, "The glory on the face of Moses must give way to the glory of another Face."

29. This has taken place with the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

30. The result is that the minister of the New Pact does not have to hide his face.

31. The glory of the gospel will never fade or be tarnished. Amen!
