Thy will be done

"Thy will be done" - (Luke 11:2) Prayer is one of the great duties of every religious man, so one of the greatest aims (goal, objective) of Christianity is to help us "pray" and to show us the obligation to do so and to instruct us on how to do it and to stimulate us to take advantage of "so excellent a grace."

I. One of His disciples said to Him, "Lord, teach us to pray."

A. John the Baptist did it (John 3:30)

1. Even though Christ is willing to teach us, He wants us to ask Him, for in this way we show Him our interest and that we are conscious "of our need."

2. Jesus Himself pleaded for God's will to be done in the Garden of Gethsemane.

3. Jesus was committed to the fulfillment of God's will and the prayer "Thy will be done" was a theme of His life.

4. It is asking God to do what He desires.

5. Recognizing God's right to govern our lives.

6. It is a declaration of submission to God's ways and His plans.

7. "Thy will be done," recognizes that God has more knowledge than we do, and we trust that His way is best.

8. (Psalm 40:8) "To do Thy will has pleased me."

9. From beginning to end, the Old Testament foretold (announced) not only that Christ would come into the world, but that He would come with a spirit of mind soon, ready to do the "will of God."

10. God's will was not only in His head, but it was "inscribed" in His own heart.

11. (Psalm 143:10) Cry for instruction.

12. The psalmist not only desired to know God's will, but he also wants a heart trained to obey that will.

13. God, after all, was his God, and what could be more appropriate than for the creature to obey its Creator?

14. Each person has their ups and downs in life, their decadence and frustrations, but not everyone has a road as rocky as David's.

15. Here his desire is that the "good Spirit of the Lord" guide him on the smoothest, stony ground (without stones), free from the extreme forms of danger and disaster to which he has hitherto been exposed.

16. (Matthew 12:50) "Who does the will of my Father who is in heaven."

17. There was no special privilege regarding access (entry, passage) to His presence.

18. It is clear that the involvement of these was true brothers, children of Mary and therefore half-brothers of our Lord.

19. "Whoever does the will of God is my brother."

20. (Matthew 26:42) "If You cannot pass this cup from Me, and I drink it, Your will be done."

21. Expressing submission to the Father's will.

22. He would drink the cup of suffering and death until He suffered the final affront.

23. In His prayer life He was necessarily alone.

24. He taught the disciples to pray and prayed in their presence, but He never prayed with them.

25. His uniqueness (exceptionality, excellence) of His person and work prevented others from sharing in His prayer life.

26. (John 7:17) If the Jews really wanted to do God's will, He Himself would reveal to them whether Christ's teachings were divine or whether the Lord was merely teaching what He wanted.

27. There is a beautiful promise here for all who earnestly seek the truth.

28. If someone is sincere, truly wants to know what the truth is, God will reveal it to him.

29. "Obedience" is the organ of spiritual knowledge.

30. (Ephesians 6:6) Even if you are in the house, store, friends, etc., remember that God sees what is in you.

31. Our Master is always watching and almost no one knows about this.

32. As servants of Christ, we should always be doing God's will from the heart, that is, with a sincere desire to please Him.

33. Your work, how you do your life, how cordial and zealous you are of your life, may it merit the Lord's approval.

34. How is your day and night like?

35. God will measure how you do His will: in purity, quality, and sincerity.

36. (James 4:15) God should be consulted in all our plans and we should do them with His will. We should live and speak with the awareness that our destiny is in His hands. We should say, "God willing, Thy will be done." Amen
