His Power

Topic: "His Power" Job 26: 5-14 Job had been struggling for words as a result of the wisdom and knowledge his peers claimed when they argued with him. Meanwhile, Job also speaks. He tells them, and argues with them with his knowledge. But the issue, as life goes, with humans is that our knowledge, most of the time, is to defend our cause, and to defend what should not be defended. What we should do is learn from our losses. We should know that our loss comes because pride manifested itself first, and before our fall, a haughty spirit manifested itself (Proverbs 16:18). What we read in this passage in chapter 26:5-14 is Job's reply to Bildad’s little speech. Here Job is immersed in one of his big arguments about "the greatness of God." What his colleagues spoke was proof of their knowledge, the wisdom they had. What was occurring was an argument between them. They were there to prove: who knew more! When you are going to talk, you must speak with a desire to exalt God. Otherwise, one is just being presumptuous and boasting of the greatness that is believed to have, instead of expressing the true knowledge of man. In this passage JOB SPEAKS OF GOD’S INFINITE GLORY AND POWER. He speaks of God's sovereignty. Even though he was under the grief of his flesh, Job speaks clearly of the greatness of God. God reveals Himself to men. HIS POWER and authority are evidenced all around us. It can be seen on earth that He is Lord, and we should acknowledge His greatness. This should be our starting point to understanding everything we live through. All power, dominion, authority, and greatness is in Him. When we stand before Him, it would be best to not speak! Job lets us see that God not only dominates sovereignly in the heavens, but that His dominion is total, even over the ghostly shadows of the dead! Job 26:6 (Vs. 5) The seas feel overwhelmed in the depths of the underground region which also extends beneath them. Hell, the Inferno squirms. The waters and the creatures that inhabit them tremble. The souls of the dead also tremble before God. The power of God is not only felt within the heights (heaven), but it also reaches into the region of the dead. Nobody can withstand Him, not even in Hell do people stop trembling. Job 26:6 ("The realm of the dead is naked before God; Destruction lies uncovered.") Abaddon is the home of destruction, that is, the place for lost souls (Rev. 9:11) which does not have God’s eyes upon it. Hades is a temporary abode for those who die, prior to the resurrection. The body will resurrect, and before that the Almighty God will look at what will become the dust of our bones. Job 26:7 ("He spreads out the northern skies over the empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing.") The north, that is, the highest part of heaven. The earth hangs because of the sovereign power of God. Man cannot hang a feather over anything, but God hangs the entire universe over nothing. In its clouds He ties water (Vs.8) like in vessels of air; as light as they are they do not burst with the weight of water within them (Proverbs 30:4). It’s as if God keeps the water in large sacks, and as huge (of extraordinary proportions) as they are, they do not break. How great is the amount of water they transport, and how thin is the sheath that encloses it! And for the benefit of the land, God distills its content drop by drop, instead of all at once.

God restrains, conceals, better yet, surrounds; and encloses His throne (vs.9). God turns clouds into a veil to cover not only His glory, but also the exterior of His throne. He conceals it from "profane eyes." His mediation or participation in anything is everywhere, but He Himself becomes invisible. Also with His power He has drawn a boundary for the waters (vs.10). The horizon separates heaven and earth. When light falls upon our horizon, the other hemisphere is dark. This way, God has perfectly laid out the difference between light and darkness. The columns, or mountains that seem to hold up the sky (vs.11) are astonished at His reproof, like thunder rumbling from rock to rock. God hurts the pride, arrogance of man and all the creation. He does this with His knowledge, His wisdom. He wounds man's pride, and arrogance and also the sea’s which He stirs. It’s that God cleanses us from all pride and arrogance (Vs.12) so that we come to see His greatness and power; to some degree. What we know of God, of His power and of His works is nothing, compared to what God really is and what He has done. Our knowledge is as it is, our capabilities, which are small and superficial. BUT THE FULL DISCOVERY OF DIVINE GLORY IS RESERVED FOR THE STATE OF OUR FUTURE GLORY. Amen.
